Ah, spring break. The wonderful hiatus from the drudgery of classes, tests, and dreary weather. You could opt for the traditional college spring break trips to Daytona Beach or Cancun. Or… you could plan an extraordinary trip you’ll remember the rest of your life.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Spring Break

Find a place off the beaten path that peaks your interest. For a more memorable trip, choose something you wouldn’t normally equate with spring break, to break the mold.

Make a spring break bucket list of exciting and fun things to do in your chosen destination. Spend time searching for out-of-the-way places and local greasy spoons.

Atypical Spring Break Ideas

Pueblo, Colorado

Just west of Pueblo, Colorado, lies Great Sand Dunes National Park. Sandboard or sand sled down massive sand dunes (up to 700 feet!) for an adventure of a lifetime. The dune fields cover 30 square miles and all are open to exploration. Temperatures won’t be too hot during spring break, but if you need to cool off, there’s a clear creek at the base of the dune field. Camp in the park and take a nighttime hike to see the heavens in a way you’ve never seen them before. With virtually no light pollution, you will see more stars than you knew existed.

Venture over to Pueblo for a tasty meal from Mr. Tandoori Urban Bar and Grill before slamming some cold ones at Shamrock Brewing Company. Spend an afternoon picking Pueblo chiles and eat them freshly roasted. Check out Whitewater Park and set out on a rafting excursion. If that’s not your speed, you can kayak, body board, and even surf on the Arkansas River.

spring break 2
The Ruby Falls within the Lookout Mountain Caverns in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Book a sleeping pod at the En Root House: Hostel Chattanooga for a different lodging experience. Meet other travelers in the common areas in this intimate setting.

Delve deep into the Lookout Mountain Caverns for a trip to Ruby Falls. This underground waterfall changes color in an unforgettable setting. At the top, explore the treetops at Ruby Falls ZIPStream Aerial Adventure, a suspended obstacle course with rope ladders, nets, bridges, and thrilling zip lines. Test your gumption at Lookout Mountain Hang Gliding, where you can fly tandem over 3,000 feet above the mountainside.

Local restaurants such as Uncle Larry’s Restaurant and 1885 Grill serve American fare with a southern twist.

spring break 3
The Glass Beach in Mendocino, California.

Mendocino, California

Pack your tent and plan a stay at Mackerricher State Park. Hike the network of trails through the park before heading to the beach, where harbor seals warm on the rocks. Take a thin trail to Glass Beach, where you’ll find a sparkling shore made entirely from sea glass in every hue imaginable. Take a ride on a Skunk Train through towering redwood forests before heading into town for a bite.

Enjoy farm-to-table fare at locally owned Trillium Cafe. Dress for this genteel eatery where you’ll enjoy seafood and steak creations paired with local wines and ciders.
