Vancouver, British Columbia, is a truly gorgeous city. With its moderate climate, it enables visitors to enjoy outdoor fun year-round. When you’re exploring Vancouver, be sure to dress for the outdoors because that is where all the city’s best activities are. Don’t know where to start? Check out this itinerary for some ideas to help you plan your trip to one of Canada’s star cities.

Morning: Fuel Up With a Great Breakfast

Head to Sophie’s Cosmic Café on West Fourth Street if you’re in the mood for a good old-fashioned American-style breakfast. The servings sizes are generous, and the food will give you the boost you need for a long day of exploring. Try Jimmy’s Greek Egg Omelet or, if you want something lighter, the Hot Organic Oatmeal.

The retro décor at this restaurant is fun, too. It features original artwork from both national and international artists.

Mid-Morning: Check Out Granville Island

Granville Island is less than two kilometers from Sophie’s Cosmic Café, so you can walk there and burn off your breakfast. Or, you can hop in your rental car and drive there in only five minutes. The island is one of the Vancouver’s most-loved neighborhoods. Explore old factories that have been turned into retail shops, galleries, and theaters.

Whatever you do, don’t miss out on the Granville Island Public Market, which has been called one of the best open-air markets in North America. You’ll find fresh produce, baked goods, and yummy ethnic snacks. After you walk around the market, grab something from a vendor or two and find a seat by the water where you can eat and watch the buskers.

If you like beer, head to Granville Island Brewing, Canada’s first microbrewery. Daily tours and tastings are available.

Afternoon: Explore Stanley Park

Just a 12-minute drive from Granville Island Public Market is Stanley Park, a 1,000-acre masterpiece of nature. This gorgeous park, located just north of Vancouver’s west end, could take a whole day or more to explore. However, if you only want to spend a couple hours there, take advantage of the hop-on, hop-off trolley that includes a guided tour. You’ll be able to pick and choose which parts of the park deserve your attention.

If you feel up for some exercise, rent a bike and take the South Creek Trail, which leads to lovely Beaver Lake. You can also walk along the Seawall to experience breathtaking views of English Bay. If you have time, check out the aquarium that sits in the park.

Evening: Wait in Line for a Gourmet Meal at Vij’s

Chef Vikram Vij is a star in Canada, and rightly so. His fine Indian-style cuisine has tempted celebrities, including Harrison Ford and an ex-Prime minister. The restaurant has a no-reservations policy, so yes, you’ll wait in line — but you’ll be able to enjoy free snacks while you’re waiting for a table! The lamb popsicles are a must-try, but you can also indulge in curry and other amazing Indian dishes. Enjoy a fun cocktail or a glass of British Columbia wine with your meal. Dinner begins at 5:30, so get there as early as you can to wait in line.

If the line is too long at Vij’s, hop next door to Rangoli, which is also run by Vikram Vij. It’s a casual-dining alternative to Vij’s, and it still offers delicious food and amazing drinks. You can hang out at Rangoli for hours; the bar is open until 2 a.m.

Late Evening: Be a Captive at Locked Canada

Locked Canada is an amusement center that is open until midnight, so you’ll have plenty of time to have fun even if you ate a late dinner. Locked Canada features several escape rooms where you and your friends have to solve a series of riddles and decipher clues to escape within a limited period of time in order to set yourselves free. There are different themes to choose from, including “Asylum” and “Criminal Minds.” Some of the themes might be scary for children, so use discretion if you’re bringing the little ones along.

If visiting Locked Canada doesn’t appeal to you, check out the schedule of shows at Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club. Shows are usually Tuesday through Saturday and start sometime between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Vancouver is one of Canada’s most famed and beloved cities thanks to its beautiful outdoor attractions, awesome food scene, and great ethnic diversity. Whether you’re visiting for a day, a week, or a month, you’ll love getting to know all the wonders of this city.
